Researcher in Residence Programme

The Researchers in Residence programme is a new initiative taken by Yadava College, Madurai to promote long term contact among invited researcher and students and teachers in the department. Researcher in Residence programme is being designed as an ideal learning and career development tool for the youngsters involved. The three day stay of a researcher in the campus will make a difference to the outlook and work of several students and teachers involved. Moreover, through this programme, the visiting researcher conveys his background knowledge, attains trust and promotes a unique bond with the department.

The Researcher in Residence talks about his research work with students and faculty of the department. Hence, the emerging research field in the subject is highlighted to the audience and this will motivate the students’ and teacher’s interest in authentic scientific research.

This programme offers several advantages to both researcher and target group alike. The guest researcher enjoyed sharing his academic enthusiasm and the break from the workbench for a few hours per week for a new challenge. The contacts to be developed between research centers and colleges may bring about innovative research practice and an effective teaching of science in the class rooms in the long run. The students involved in RinR Programmes may develop enthusiasm and potential to progress into higher science education. A ‘meaningful personal connection’ is especially important to the students and their teacher, allowing the researcher to serve as an effective role model through this Researcher in Residence programme.

Department of Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics had organized a programme ‘Researcher in Residence’ for the members of the faculty of Mathematics from 21 July 2010 to 23 July 2010.

Dr. P. Sundaram, Former Principal, NGM College, Pollachi was the Resource person. During his stay he enlightened the members on the various aspects of research in Mathematics. He had one to one discussions with the members and clarified their doubts. Fuzzy Analysis, Fuzzy Algebra and Topology were discussed at length. He also interacted with the UG and PG students that triggered their research interest.

Department of Physics

The Department of Physics of Yadava College, Madurai organized a five day UGC sponsored Researcher in Residence programme for the students and faculty of Physics from 2nd August 2010 to 6th August 2010.

Dr. R.V. Krishna Kumar, Associate Professor, Department of Physics, Thiagarajar College, Madurai has presented his expertise and graced the occasion. During his visit, he motivated the students and faculty to members to undertake research in thrust areas like simulation in physics, crystallography and Nanophysics which will revolutionize science in the forthcoming years.

He focused about some of the research opportunities in laboratories like CECRI, IGCAR, BARC shich would help the students to pursue their research career. He had constructive interactions with the students regarding emerging research activities in various fields.

The five day programme has been the measuring tool of their research skill and has made the members to feel ‘Where I am’. The programme inspired audience to excel themselves so as to combat the future challenges ahead.

Department of English (Regular)

The present day education does not restrict itself to mere class room teaching with the traditional talk chalk method. Newer avaenues have to be created to make teaching a challenging as well as entertaining one. Engaging in research is one of the most wanted thruse area and the Department of English (Regular) has very well understood this. With a view to instill a research acumen among the members of the English faculty, a UGC sponsored Research in Residence programme was organized on the 9th and 10th of August 2010. Dr. G. Baskaran, Associate Professor, Department of English, VHNSN Collegewas the Resource person. During his two day stay in the department, he dealt at length on the various aspects of research in English. He also enumerated on the nuances of on-line publishing.

Conclusion

The Researcher in Residence programme conducted by the three departments, English, Mathematics and physics, have been of a great help in motivating the members of these faculties towards higher research in their respective areas. The college proposes to conduct this programme next year in all the departments.
